Residents of La Plata, located to the south east of Buenos Aires, kicked off the start of the new year by building several "momos," (dolls) as per their tradition, and setting fire to them. "The tradition of the city of La Plata was born in the 50s. And the reason for the tradition is to burn the most transcendental bad thing of the year, so this year the coronavirus was inevitable," said artist Martin Falloca, on Thursday, as he showed off his effigy of a devil holding a globe in his hands. Other effigies that were also prepared featured hand sanitiser, the Sputnik V vaccine and the late football legend Diego Maradona. 61 effigies were made mostly of cardboard, paper and wooden panels, , which were later burned across over 60 locations in the city to mark the arrival of the year 2021.
